What Is Marshmallow Fluff?
Also known as marshmallow cream, marshmallow fluff is a meringue-like confection with a taste similar to that of a marshmallow. It is generally made from beaten egg whites, sugar, golden syrup, vanilla, and salt.
Marshmallow fluff is used in a plethora of desserts and snack recipes. It’s often paired with peanut butter to create the iconic “fluffernutter” flavor.
For this recipe, we like to save time and buy marshmallow fluff at the grocery store. Any brand should work perfectly! Marshmallow fluff/cream can be stored in a pantry or cupboard at room temperature.

Ingredients
Rice cereal: We love using Rice Krispies Cereal, but other brands of crispy rice cereal work great as well!
Marshmallow fluff/marshmallow cream: Marshmallow fluff or cream is a great alternative for marshmallows when making rice krispie treats. The fluff acts as an adhesive that holds the cereal together.
Butter: Butter adds flavor and will keep your marshmallow fluff rice krispie treats from becoming too sticky. We use salted butter in this recipe but you can substitute unsalted if needed.
Salt: Adding salt gives extra flavor and accentuates the other sweet flavors in the recipe.
Pure vanilla extract: Vanilla is the perfect addition to any rice krispie treat recipe. Its unique flavor makes these sweet treats even more delicious.
How To Make This Recipe
Start by prepping a 9”x13” pan by lightly spraying it with non-stick cooking spray. If desired, you can line the pan with parchment paper before spraying it for easy removal after the treats are set up.
Next, add the marshmallow fluff and the butter to a large microwavable bowl. Microwave for 1-2 minutes in 30-second increments to keep the bowl from overflowing.
Once the mixture is completely melted, remove the bowl from the microwave and stir it briefly to combine. Immediately mix in the salt and vanilla extract.
Then, quickly add the rice krispie cereal to the marshmallow mixture while it’s still very warm. Use a rubber spatula to stir until the cereal is fully coated.
Finally, use the spatula to press the rice krispie mixture into the prepared pan. Set them aside to set up for 30 minutes to an hour. Once they are completely cooled, cut them into squares and serve.
Recipe Tips and Tricks
Use salted butter: Salted butter adds more flavor to rice krispie treats, so we recommend it over unsalted butter in this recipe.
Prepare your ingredients before you begin: After melting the butter, it will begin to solidify quickly, so have your ingredients measured and ready to combine right away.
Microwave in 30-second increments: When microwaving the butter and marshmallow fluff, do so in 30-second increments. This will help prevent overheating or burning the ingredients. It will also help keep the bowl from overflowing.
Use a 9”x13” pan: We recommend using a 9”x13” pan to make your rice krispie treats with marshmallow fluff. This size of pan can feed a crowd while giving your rice cereal treats a good thickness as well.
Use non-stick spray: When measuring marshmallow fluff, spray your measuring cup with non-stick spray to keep it from sticking. You can even spray your bowl before adding the fluff to make the mixing process easier.
