Why You’ll Love This Recipe
There are so many things to love about this creamy milkshake recipe, but here are just a few:
- It's made with just 3 simple ingredients
- Your trusty blender is all you need
- You can whip it up in 5 minutes or less
- It is extra thick and creamy
- You can easily add extra flavors and toppings
Ingredients
Here’s what you’ll need to make a homemade strawberry banana milkshake with ice cream:
Vanilla ice cream: Being from Texas, we love using Blue Bell vanilla ice cream, but any vanilla ice cream will do!
Frozen strawberries: Adding frozen strawberries will give your shake a sweet strawberry flavor, a beautiful pink color, and the perfect texture.
Frozen banana: Freezing your banana will help achieve a super thick and creamy texture when the shake is blended. They will also pack your milkshake with creamy banana flavor!
How To Make This Recipe
prepare the ingredients
You can use pre-frozen strawberries and bananas or freeze your own ahead of time. If you are freezing your fresh fruit, peel your banana and cut the tops of your strawberries beforehand.
blend the ingredients
Start by adding the ice cream and the frozen fruit to a high-speed blender.
You can either press the milkshake/ice cream button on your blender or use the pulse button to slowly combine the ingredients. Be sure to blend until the consistency is smooth and creamy.
For an even thicker milkshake, you can add one or two extra scoops of vanilla ice cream. For a milkshake with a slightly thinner consistency, add a few tablespoons of milk. Whole milk is a great option because it keeps the texture creamy.
garnish and serve
Pour your creamy strawberry banana milkshake into a serving glass and add your favorite toppings. Some of the best ways to top this shake are with a drizzle of strawberry syrup, chocolate shavings, and extra strawberries!
Recipe Tips and Tricks
Peel your banana before freezing. Once a banana is frozen, it can be extremely difficult to remove the peel. Save yourself the trouble and remove the peel before freezing. I usually put my banana in a freezer-safe plastic bag before tossing it in the freezer.
Thoroughly freeze your ice cream. Make sure your ice cream is fully frozen when adding it to the blender. If your ice cream is slightly melted, the texture of your milkshake won't be as thick.
Use frozen fruit. Frozen fruit provides the thickest milkshake texture. You can either buy frozen fruit or freeze your fresh fruit before making this recipe.
Stir as needed. If your frozen fruit and ice cream have trouble blending, don’t worry. Stop your blender completely and remove the lid. Stir ingredients with a spoon or spatula and then continue to blend.
Add milk as needed. I usually make this recipe without adding milk to keep my milkshake extra thick. However, if you're having trouble getting the ingredients to blend even after stirring, add milk in small amounts until your milkshake blends smoothly.
Making Milkshakes In A Blender
Using a high-powered blender is the quickest and easiest way to make these frozen treats at home. You can also read about best practices for making milkshakes in a blender in our thick banana milkshake post!
For a thinner shake: If you want a milkshake with a thinner texture, try using fresh fruit or adding 2-3 tablespoons of milk before blending. Add more milk, 1-2 tablespoons at a time, until you reach your preferred consistency.
Blending your milkshake for a bit longer can also make it less thick. If you're using fresh fruit, make sure your bananas and strawberries are ripe for the best flavor.
For a thicker shake: If you're into super thick shakes, just throw in more ice cream! The more ice cream you add to your milkshake, the thicker it will be. Freezing any ingredients you want to add, like fruit, can also help make your milkshake thicker.

Recipe Variations
This classic strawberry banana milkshake recipe is delicious as is. However, it can be fun to switch things up and explore new flavors. These are some of my favorite recipe variations.
- Use strawberry ice cream instead of vanilla
- Add ice, milk, and vanilla protein powder instead of ice cream to turn this into a banana strawberry smoothie
- Add cocoa powder for a chocolate strawberry banana milkshake
- Use chocolate ice cream instead of vanilla
- Add in a spoonful of peanut butter
Topping Ideas
If you like adding lots of toppings to your milkshakes like I do, here are some topping ideas you might like:
- Whipped cream
- Fresh strawberries
- Fresh banana slices
- Nilla wafers
- Nuts
- Sprinkles
- Chocolate drizzle
- Strawberry sauce
- Caramel sauce
- Crushed graham crackers
Whipped Cream For Milkshake
Making homemade whipped cream for milkshakes is super easy to do. Personally, I'm all for homemade over the canned stuff whenever I've got a little time on my hands.
All you need is two ingredients: heavy cream and sugar (or sweetener of your choice). Add the desired amount of heavy whipping cream to a large bowl and sweeten to taste. You can even skip the sugar or sweetener entirely if that's more your style.
Use an electric mixer to whip the cream until it thickens and forms stiff peaks. Add as much as your heart desires on top of your milkshake. You can store any leftover whipped cream in the refrigerator for about a week.
